Aspen High volleyball advances

After 12 hours of play, five opponents and two injuries, the Aspen High School volleyball team is headed for the regional tournament.

The Skiers emerged from Saturday’s district tournament in Grand Junction as one of two teams that will advance to regionals next weekend. During a tournament that began at 9 a.m. Saturday and lasted until just after 9 that night, AHS dropped only three games. After defeating Gunnison, Olathe and Cedaredge in straight sets, the Skiers were forced into a third game vs. Roaring Fork, and eventually won 2-1, before suffering their only loss to Eagle Valley, 1-2.

“I think we did great, [considering] how many hours we played,” said exhausted senior Jacqui Samborski.

AHS got off to a shaky start Saturday, Samborski said ? Gunnison, the first competitor of the day, built a nearly 13-point lead before the Skiers rallied for the win. Aspen gained momentum until the team’s faceoff with Eagle Valley, one of the Skiers’ last opponents of the day.

“I personally think we could have beaten them, but I think it was just the end of such a long day,” Samborski said.

Saturday’s wins came despite the loss of two players, Samborski said ? Skiers Heather Jordan and Jessica Mann will sit out the rest of the season due to wrist injuries.

Both Aspen and Eagle Valley ? teams that, along with Cedaredge, tied for first place among Class 3A Western Slope competitors going into districts ? will move on to next weekend’s regional tournament. Regional play will begin at 8 a.m. next Saturday at Middle Park, Samborski said.
