Alpine, AHS girls still running away with podiums

The Alpine Christian Academy girls cross country won its first meet of the season Friday, and the Aspen High girls finished second at a different meet on Saturday.

Behind second- and third-place finishes from March Thompson and Ashley Eaton, respectively, the Alpine Christian girls topped six other teams at the 9,000′ Invitational at the Frisco Nordic Center. Buena Vista was second and Colorado Academy was third.

Thompson finished the 5K in 22 minutes, 43 seconds, seven seconds ahead of Eaton. Whitney Lund rounded out Alpine Christian’s scoring runners with a 10th-place finish (25:03), followed by Deanna Spracher (13th), Sam Hoffman (14th), Ukare Sano (25th) and Meagan Goodwin (36th) in the field of 41 girls.



On the boys side, Alpine Christian’s John Tucker was second (18:55) in the field of 50 starters, followed by teammates Collin Stewart (10th), Keane Karnan (14th) and Lloyd Tucker (26th). Buena Vista won the title among eight teams in the field. (Alpine Christian did not record a team score.)

Aspen High freshman Christy Severy blazed the trail once again for the AHS girls at Saturday’s Moffat County Invitational.




Severy was second overall for girls (20:49) behind Moffat County’s Danielle Brown (20:15). Aspen’s Besha Deane was 12th, followed by Jenny Hamilton (18th), Erin Kiernan (23rd), Dylan Braun (24th), Jessica Andrews (33rd), Kathryn Eastley (35th), Maile Wade (39th), Elissa Rodman (40th) and Katie Roach (54th).

The Aspen girls finished second to Moffat County, ahead of Steamboat in third.

The Aspen boys finished seventh at the Moffat County Invitational, led by Simi Hamilton’s third-place finish (17:26), 19 seconds behind winner Glen Randall of Palisade. Unitah won the team title, followed by Palisade and Moffat County.

Aspen’s Sean Braisted was 36th, followed by Scott Evans (48th), John Hatanaka (53rd), Andrew Preusch (63rd), Weston Boyles (68th), David Rodman (74th), Frederic Clausen (76th) and Jake Lansburgh (78th).

On Saturday, Aspen hosts Alpine Christian, among other schools from around the state, for the Chris Severy Invitational. Traditionally one of the tougher meets in the state, it’s also the Skiers’ only home meet of the season.
