AHS ski teams take 2nd at state
February 23, 2004
Despite missing four of their top skiers, Aspen High’s boys and girls ski teams both finished second in the state high school championships in Steamboat over the weekend.
Additionally, three AHS Skiers are now state champions.
Senior Gillian Hearn won the alpine giant slalom, Brandon Cooper, a junior, won the nordic skate, and sophomore Paul Britvar won the alpine slalom. Also, Britvar took home bronze in the giant slalom, and Cooper finished fourth in the nordic classic.
Hearn, Packy Westfeldt and Lange Adams were all competing in an FIS race and were unable to participate in the state’s slalom event.
Simi Hamilton, a junior at AHS and one of the top nordic racers in the country, did not compete in any of the events. Hamilton was frequently traveling to national races and did not compete in enough high school races to qualify for states.
“All the kids did a great job,” Mike Flynn, the coordinator of the Aspen High ski teams, said. “With Lange, Gillian, Simi and Packy gone it gave an opportunity for some of the young kids to make up the difference, and they did a pretty good job.”

Aspen’s Laura Hatanaka, a freshman, took fifth place in both the nordic classic and skate, with senior Aimee Schwartz finishing seventh in both events.
“We still think we could have taken first had we had everybody there,” Flynn said. “Just to get second with those guys gone was really remarkable ” I’m really happy for the kids, they did a great job.”
