Spend offseason in N’awlins

Dear Editor:For music-food-fun-loving mountain folk slipping into that abyss called “mud season,” do yourself a favor and head on down to N’awlins for one of the best outdoor parties ever. For reasons inexplicable, this party is misnamed the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival … an instant turnoff for everyone but a few jazz cats. The jazz tent is but one of 11 stages that run 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sundays, April 27-29 and May 4-6.Blues, R&B, Gospel, Zydeco, Afro-Carib … this is a live music extravaganza that will make your feet happy and your soul both shaken and stirred!Check it out … opening day: George Porter Jr., Dr. John, then Van Morrison … all on the big stage. Want some soul? Percy Sledge! Little R&B? Lucinda Williams! Not enough? Norah Jones, Rod Stewart, Jerry Lee Lewis, Bonnie Raitt, Marcia Ball, ZZ Top, Pharoah Sanders and Harry Connick Jr. Big names and some not-so-big, but all fabulously entertaining.Food? Not exactly a cholesterol-friendly venue, but for culinary decadence you can’t beat N’awlins Katrina aftermath? You can go gawk at the destruction, or you can avoid it. The French Quarter didn’t flood, and Jazzfest is all compactly staged at the fairgrounds, a short and cheap cab ride away.Complete info at http://www.nojazzfest.com, or for more perspective based on my 17 consecutive years, e-mail jnoyes@aol.com.Jim NoyesCarbondale
