Spell What?!

01: The defending champion Robin Smith with the trophy once again.

Oliver Sharpe, board president for the Aspen Youth Center, approached me in the fall with an invitation to participate in the organization’s annual spelling-bee benefit. Familiar with the nonprofit and all it offers the community, I accepted. Not familiar with the competitive yet comical format, I didn’t know what was in store exactly.

After months of preparation by all six local celebrity spellers, Spell What?! took place Thursday at the Aspen Meadows with a full house of 200 guests, opening with a cocktail reception and silent auction, inspiring speeches from local Aspen Youth Center kids and the fun game-show gala.

Stumped by words not necessarily used in everyday vocabulary (e.g., numismatist, speleologist, mellifluous), each contestant tried our hands at spelling them out with a chance to have “cheats” bought by the audience, which enabled us to endure with another chance to spell the word, a free pass or even immunity to the end. The final two went head-to-head in Round 8, with reigning champion Robin Smith maintaining her title and bragging rights for another year.
