Speed freaks united

Dear Editor:This weekend marked the 28th consecutive year for the Aspen Town Downhill, an event that gives local speed freaks a safe venue to take flight on their skis. The course featured speeds approaching 70 mph amid challenging turns and interesting terrain changes. A great group of competitors turned out to test the limits of their skill and nerve. The one thing that did not seem to have limits, however, was the generosity of our community is supporting this event. I would like to take a moment to thank the businesses who donated prizes for the top finishers: the Big Wrap, Explore Booksellers, Grill Next Door, Gusto, Kenichi, L’Hosteria, Little Red Ski House, Mezzaluna, Olives Restaurant, Pacifica, Replay Sports, Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse, Su Casa, Takah Sushi and Zocalito. Their support made the event far more special.Kudos also, to Buttermilk mountain manager Hans Hohl, race director Scott Nichols and all the volunteers for keeping this event alive. Lastly and loudly, applause for Asia Jenkins and Christian Messner, who crushed the field with their skiing prowess to become this year’s Aspen speed champions.Gary GleasonAspen
