Speak up for safety

Dear Editor:

After 9/11, the federal government implemented the federal firearms program that gave commercial airline pilots the right to carry a gun and defend his or her ship against a hostile takeover.

This program has been enormously successful and the pilots who have been approved to carry guns have had the best behavior of any federal law enforcement agency.

President Obama is quietly ending this program, disarming the pilots who guard our lives while airborne. This action seems potentially dangerous and irresponsible; even the Washington Post has editorialized against it.

Political ideology has seemingly led to the removal of a cost-effective security layer for the airlines. Going forward, the flying public will surely be more vulnerable to airborne attack.

It bothers me that this has been done without proper public discourse. When it comes to our safety, we the American people should have a voice. Unfortunately, our public servants in Washington do not seem to think so.
