Sowing seeds of distrust

Dear Editor:

The only incident that I know of in which oil and gas facilities were sabotaged in Garfield County was suspected to be caused by a disgruntled former EnCana employee (“Sabotage suspected in well spill,” Post Independent, Dec. 13, 2003).

Thus I was a bit perplexed to see the recent article in The Aspen Times suggesting that the large majority of Coloradans, including the majority of local governments in the affected region, who want to see the Roan Plateau managed for its existing values and traditional uses pose the largest threat of sabotage in the gas fields (“Ex-FBI agent says terrorism unlikely in Rifle-area gas fields,”, Feb. 18).

This is fear-mongering, scapegoating and spurious accusation at its worst. And while I fully expect to hear such inflammatory rhetoric from the likes of Greg Schnacke and his industry front group, my understanding was that EnCana believes itself to be an important member of the community and an operator that wants to work with area towns and governments.

If this is EnCana’s position ” that its neighbors and local community members are suspect ” then it should back that allegation with fact. Can the industry provide a list of suspected sabotage in gas fields and who was found to be behind such acts? Otherwise it appears that the company is simply trying to inflame people and sow seeds of distrust.
