Some of Aspen’s finest are off marrying well
Aspen Times Staff Writer
The Evening Standard of London dished up a full plate of celebrity gossip May 16 and Aspen was in the recipe. See if you can follow along and find the Aspen connection.
“Steve Bing was having an affair with casino owner Kirk Kerkorian’s wife for weeks, it is claimed. Mr. Bing, who is waiting to give a DNA sample in his paternity battle with actress Liz Hurley, had a secret fling with former tennis player Lisa Bonder nine months before the birth of Kira Kerkorian, a close friend claimed in court papers.
“Mr. Kerkorian, 84, says he is infertile and insists that the Hollywood playboy is Kira’s father. Ms. Bonder is taking Mr. Kerkorian to court for nearly £223,000 a month in child maintenance.
“Ms. Bonder, from Aspen, Colorado, was married to Mr. Kerkorian for only a month. But she was sleeping with Mr. Bing for months in the run-up to Kira’s birth in 1998, according to documents filed at Los Angeles Superior Court by Mr. Kerkorian in the child-support battle.”
Got it so far? Here’s the breathless part.
“Anne DuPont, a friend of Ms. Bonder, says in the documents that she was invited to meet Mr. Bing and a friend at the Bel-Air Hotel for drinks in July 1997. Ms. Bonder and Mr. Bing slipped away for a while in mid-meeting, Ms. DuPont says, adding: ‘When she returned she told me she had just had sex with Steve Bing.'”
The marrying kind?
The British newspaper, the Mail on Sunday, reported on May 19 on the adventures of another Aspenite.
Nigel Dempster wrote that “although they threw a joint birthday party at his Palm Beach mansion, there is unlikely to be a third marriage for industrialist Bill Koch and Bridget Rooney, mother of a 5-year-old son, Liam, by Hollywood legend Kevin Costner.
“With Bill, who runs the locally based Oxbow Corporation, celebrating his 62nd birthday and Bridget her 40th, the couple, who met last year near Aspen, Colorado, where she has a horse ranch, decided on a joint bash.
“Bill’s second wife, New Orleans-born Angela Gauntt, received an GBP 11 million cheque on their divorce after just four years of marriage and two children.
“He paid an estimated GBP 34 million to divorce first wife Joan, mother of his lookalike son Wyatt, 15, as well as GBP 10 million to Texan Marie Beard, who had a 5-year-old daughter Charlotte by him.
Perhaps he’s learning to say, “I don’t.”
The Daily Mail of London (love those Brits!) reported on May 18 that Catherine Zeta is castle hunting.
“She has designer clothes, fast cars and diamonds. And her husband is one of the richest men in Hollywood,” the paper noted. “But Catherine Zeta Jones wants one more thing that Michael Douglas has yet to give her, her own castle in Wales.
“Miss Zeta Jones and her 57-year-old husband already own six homes. She has a house in the Pacific Palisades area of Los Angeles, but her main L.A. residence is a luxurious apartment owned by Douglas.
“The couple also own a home in Bermuda, one in Majorca, a ranch in the ski resort of Aspen, Colorado, and a flat in New York.”
Might we suggest Seven Castles in Basalt?
