Solar project wins state grant

Aspen Times Staff Report

Sustainable Settings, a Woody Creek educational project, will receive a state of Colorado grant to fund installation of a solar electric system.

The $9,000 grant, from the Colorado Office of Energy Conservation, will provide half of the $18,000 needed to purchase, install and maintain the system. The system is being created to foster learning about solar energy within the local community.

The photovoltaic system is being designed by Solar Energy International, a Carbondale nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting and teaching solar energy, with the assistance of Pat Kiernan of Basalt-based EcoElectric. The project is a collaboration between Sustainable Settings, the Aspen Community School and Solar Energy International.

The Community Office for Resource Efficiency has pledged $2,000 to the project and helped secure further funding from Holy Cross Energy.

Sustainable Settings is a program incorporating the creation of resource-efficient homes and other components of a working community for educational purposes. It provides workshops, short courses and internships.

Sustainable Settings is a project of the Aspen Educational Research Foundation, a nonprofit group that provides learning opportunities for people of all ages. The foundation’s best-known project is the Aspen Community School in Woody Creek.
