Soccer players take offense

(This letter was originally addressed to Nell Birk.)Dear Editor:After reading your letter regarding John Gillies and his sportsmanship conduct, I found it necessary to respond to your letter of concern. Calling him a weenie and an embarrassment to the school and community was beyond low. You not only insulted him, but you offended me and the rest of his players. The game against Basalt on April 7 was, to say the least, a rough and physical game. The collision between players Kat Fitzpatrick and Grace Seigle unquestionably affected the game for the worse. From a player who was on the field at the time of the accident, I found Johns reaction to be reasonable, considering a player he cares for got hurt.In regards to your comments about the four mountains and two ice rinks, he was commending the Basalt players for their commitment and dedication to one sport. John Gillies is the best coach I have ever had. He dedicates all his time and energy to his girls, and he is part of the reason why I play and love the sport. If you know Coach Gillies as well as you claim you do, you would know that the invitation to go bowling will have to be declined, considering our beloved coach only has four fingers!Kelly MitchellVarsity captain, Aspen High School soccerAspen
