Calling all snowshoers: There’s money out there to be made.If you’ve ever been hoofing it up a hill on your snowshoes and wished you could get paid for your efforts, you just may get the chance later this month.Beaver Creek plays host to the first-ever North American Snowshoe Championships on Saturday, Jan. 15, at 10 a.m., presented by the Beaver Creek Resort Co., Subaru, Atlas Snowshoes and the Beaver Creek Merchants’ Association.The event is part of the Beaver Creek Snowshoe Adventure Series and features a $7,500 cash purse, the largest ever in the rapidly emerging sport. Winners of the men’s and women’s 10K event will receive $2,000 each, with $1,000 and $500 for second and third, respectively. Additional cash will be awarded in “prems” (goals within the race itself) and a 100-yard Dash for Cash to immediately precede the event.Along with the competitive 10K race, the event will feature a 5K fun walk/run for the recreational snowshoer, as well as a “Kids’ K.”Following the “Kids’ K,” participating parents of children ages 4-12 will be treated to child care and entertainment compliments of the Beaver Creek Children’s Theater, allowing them to compete in the meantime.Beaver Creek Snowshoe Fun-Fest entry fees are only $15 with preregistration (at Mountain Quest Sports in Edwards and Base Mountain Sports in Beaver Creek), $20 the day of the event, and include free Atlas snowshoe demos and post-race food & drink for all participants.Participants may register from 8:30-10 a.m. the morning of the event next to the Covered Bridge in the Beaver Creek Village Plaza.
