Zoppé Italian Family Circus returns to Snowmass this weekend

Staff report

The Zoppé Italian Family Circus returns to Snowmass Village this weekend for its 175th anniversary year.

The European clan behind the family circus will showcase its traditional acts as well as a few new ones — including acrobatic feats, equestrian showmanship and a rare cycling act — in honor of its ceremonial occasion.

The Zoppé first performed in Snowmass in 2015 and befriended many folks and fans throughout the Roaring Fork Valley, said Zoppé Colorado Tour Director Gina Hallisey. "It's one of the Zoppé's favorite stops on the Colorado tour," which also includes performances in Avon, Winter Park and Wheat Ridge.

The Zoppé Circus is staged as it was back in the mid-1800s, with costumes, music and acts to reflect its history.

The circus' origins trace back to Budapest, Hungary, in 1842, when the young French street performer Napoleone Zoppe met and fell in love with an equestrian ballerina named Ermengilda.

Ermengilda's father, however, disproved of Napoleone and his street-performing status, according to Napoleone's great-great-grandson, Giovanni Zoppe.
