Following in the footsteps of countless other Colorado towns and cities, Snowmass Village is hosting a farmer’s market this summer.

Offering everything from vegetables to locally raised meat to artisan jewelry, the market started up two weekends ago and will now run every Sunday through Aug. 30. Like all markets, it’s a chance for local farmers to sell their wares.

Take Farmer Jack, a business that sells vegetables, fruit, meat and cheese from not only owner Jack Reed’s farm in Paonia but others throughout the North Fork and Roaring Fork valleys.

“There’s not a million vendors coming (to the Snowmass market), so we’re trying to bring everything that five or six vendors would bring,” Reed said.

This Sunday, July 11, Reed said he will have the last of the season’s cherries and apricots and the first of the peaches. Corn and tomatoes should follow in the next week or two.

Reed also brings meat from Lizzie’s Market in Paonia and chevre goat cheese from Thistle Whistle in Hotchkiss, as well as fresh quail and duck eggs.

“When Colorado produce starts growing, there’s a ton of it real quick,” Reed said. Farmer’s markets are one of the key outlets for small farms to move their products, he added.

But it’s an all-day job: loading up the trailer early in the morning, working the market for hours and then returning home, which can be a long drive for some farmers. Reed’s business makes it easier for them to have representation at area markets throughout the week.

Colorado farmer’s markets are also a chance for local artisans to do business. Snowmass Village resident Sarah Popejoy is selling her collection of handmade necklaces, bracelets and rings at the Snowmass market.

An art school grad, Popejoy’s designs are largely inspired by her love of antiques, incorporating items such as compasses, pocket watches and whistles.

“I really like the antique pieces,” Popejoy said. “I don’t really see other people doing it. With jewelry, you have to be creative to do something different.”

Other pieces incorporate natural stones and crystals, and lately she has tried her hand at Eastern-inspired designs.

As a resident, Popejoy sees the Snowmass market as a benefit to the community and, she hopes, to local businesses. Located on the Base Village plaza, the market is in close proximity to other Sunday activities such as brunch at Ricard and a Bloody Mary bar at Base Camp, free yoga, face painting and lawn games.

The Snowmass Base Village Sunday Market is open from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Sunday through Aug. 30.
