Snowmass Rotary announces Mammoth Meltdown winners
Snowy the Mammoth fell through the frozen pond on the Snowmass Club golf course on at 10:59:30 a.m. on April 8, marking the end of the first annual Mammoth Meltdown. This unique fundraiser, sponsored by the Snowmass Rotary Club, had Snowy the steel mammoth sculpture sitting on the ice for 39 days and one hour, intermittently buried in snow or basking in the warm sun before taking the sudden plunge to the bottom. Participants in the fundraiser paid to guess the exact minute that Snowy would sink through the melting pond via the fundraiser’s website at http://www.mammothmeltdown.com.
Jennifer Swanson, a Snowmass Village resident, won $1,000 with the closest guess at 12:15 p.m. Donna Houghton, from New Smyrna Beach, Fla., won a two-night stay at the Viceroy Hotel with the second closest guess at 1:20 p.m., and Randy Woods, of Aspen, won a two-night stay at the Snowmass Mountain Chalet with the third closest guess at 1:47 p.m.
The Snowmass Rotary Club is donating all proceeds to Hospice of the Valley, Little Red School House, and Challenge Aspen Military Opportunities. Organizers have decided that the success of this first-time event has laid the groundwork for future Mammoth Meltdowns.
“This event was such a fun undertaking and has so much potential for growth,” said Cynthia Berecek, fundraiser chairwoman. “Our first year was all about baby steps and keeping it simple so we could see exactly what kind of challenges would arise. Next year, look for a larger mammoth sculpture and a more robust publicity effort to go along with it.”
Snowmass Rotary would like to thank all participants who purchased guesses and joined in the fun. Also, many thanks go to its main sponsor, the Snowmass Club, which provided the frozen watering hole on which Snowy sat. Other sponsors who made it all possible include Viceroy Snowmass, Snowmass Hospitality, Challenge Aspen, Related, Sundance Wine, Aspen Snowmass Sotheby’s, Aspen Skiing Co., KSNO the Mammoth, Rossmore Enterprises, Alpine Bank, Alpine Property Management, The Daly Bottle, 81615, Grain, Hyder Construction, Bliss Woods, Snowmass Community Fund, Howard Rudge, Scott Sigler, Merrill Bradley and Fishbrain & Trout.
