Snowmass Wildcat Fire Protection District Fire Marshal John Mele will be honored nationally next month for his commitment to wildfire mitigation.

Mele is one of 14 recipients of the National Wildfire Mitigation Award, which recognizes individuals and organizations’ innovation, leadership and dedication to wildfire mitigation.

“This is a huge honor for John, as well as our fire district,” said Snowmass Wildcat Fire Protection District Deputy Fire Chief Kevin Issel.

By honoring these individuals and organizations, the Wildfire Mitigation Awards sponsors seek to increase public recognition and awareness of the value of wildfire mitigation efforts, according to a statement from the National Association of State Foresters.

The Wildfire Mitigation Awards sponsors include The National Association of State Foresters, the International Association of Fire Chiefs, the National Fire Protection Association and the USDA Forest Service.

“More than ever, wildland fire is a serious threat to life and property in the United States,” International Association of Fire Chiefs President John Sinclair said in the statement. “On behalf of the IAFC, I commend this year’s awardees for their innovation, leadership and commitment to safe communities.”

The awards will be presented at the International Association of Fire Chiefs’ Wildland-Urban Interface Conference in Reno, Nevada, on March 22.
