Snowmass bowling alley keeps the lights on this offseason
When residents of the valley are looking for something to do in the offseason, Snowmass Village is not typically the place they go. Most restaurants and even many hotels close for business, at least for some amount of time.
But this year, Slopeside Lanes is creating some vibrancy by remaining open and starting an offseason bowling league. Starting May 7, the co-ed, handicap league will be just for fun and open to people of all abilities, says owner Mark Reece.
Play will be on Wednesday nights but could spill over into Thursdays if enough people sign up, Reece said. The season will culminate in a single-elimination tournament — with cash prizes for the top three teams — on July 2. Sponsored by Pabst Blue Ribbon, there also will be weekly prizes and giveaways.
The idea behind the league is simply to provide something fun for residents to do during the week this offseason, Reece said.
“If you’re gonna go out, make it that night,” he said.
People can sign up to participate in teams of four, and it will cost $100 per team to play. The sign-up fee goes into the pot for cash prizes, so the more teams that participate, the bigger the payout for the winning teams at the end of the season.
Players can select alternates if they’re going to be out of town one week. Because the bowling alley has eight lanes, Reece expects to schedule teams to play in more than one shift.
Open for business
In addition to league play, Slopeside Lanes, located beneath Aspen Sports on the Snowmass Village Mall, will be open from 5 to 11 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, from May 1 to mid-June.
After what he called a “great reception” in the bowling alley’s first season, Reece said the summer looks promising. He plans to build a horseshoe pit outside the bowling alley’s back doors.
“In the summer, it doesn’t get dark early,” Reece said. “People don’t want to sit in their hotel rooms. … I think summer’s going to be great.”
The bowling alley will be open in the evenings seven days a week this summer.
