Skiers located, assisted
Mountain Rescue Aspen personnel were called to the Government Trail area Wednesday night to find and assist two cross-country skiers reported missing, according to the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office.
Nedra Hecker, of Charleston County, S.C., called local emergency dispatchers at about 8 p.m. Wednesday to say that her husband, Bruce Hecker, and brother-in-law, Carl Hecker, had not shown up at the West Buttermilk parking lot to be picked up at dusk. At 10:30 a.m., the two brothers left Snowmass Village for an excursion along the popular trail.
The Sheriff’s Office notified Mountain Rescue Aspen of the incident. Seven rescue-team members responded, and at about 10:15 p.m., five of them mobilized from the West Buttermilk parking lot into the backcountry to search for the missing skiers. Two remained at the parking lot to assist with logistics.
After a brief search, the two skiers were found. Uninjured, they were assisted safely down to the parking lot, the Sheriff’s Office said.
