How the Snowmass map has changed

Aspen Historical Society

A fun donation to the archives from Harry Bauman in 2005 included this map prepared in June 1972 by THK Associates Inc. showing how the original planners of Snowmass Village imagined the community would develop. As a note on the map, it says that “It is not a detailed development plan. This map summarizes and depicts planned land uses by broad category.” What is interesting is where they planned the original town center located just above where Town Park is today and where a games area and a school were hoped to be built — now employee housing, tennis courts and the recreation center. The equestrian-center area is now the rodeo grounds and parking lot. While much is the same in many places where they planned for development, they have remained open space (like the Hidden Valley area, which is now part of the Sky Mountain Park trail system).

Editor’s note: This page is a partnership between the Snowmass Sun and the Aspen Historical Society with

two primary goals in mind: to improve the knowledge of Snowmass history in the region and to collect historical photographs of the Snowmass region for the society. If you have pieces of history to donate,

please send them to archives@aspenhistory.org or call 970-925-3721.
