History: Tennis season

“Snowmass tennis to be on cable TV,” announced The Aspen Times on Aug. 4, 1983. “The Bombay Gin Celebrity Tennis Cup at the Snowmass Club this coming weekend will be covered by the USA Cable TV network for a special program to be broadcast later this month. … Although many spectators attend the tournament to see the celebrities play, highlight of the weekend, according to club officials, is an exhibition match between Carling Bassett and Vincent Van Patten. Carling at 15 is the youngest new player on the international pro circuit and has surprised many with her victories, while Van Patten, touring pro for the Snowmass Club, has defeated many of the top pros, including Jose-Luis Clerc, Vitas Gerulaitis and John McEnroe at one tournament. The two formed a team to compete in the mixed doubles at Wimbledon last June. He quit an acting career to become a prop several years ago and she recently starred in a film, Spring Fever, with Susan Anton.”
