Election Q&A: What is your vision for Snowmass?

Jill Beathard
Snowmass Sun

Six candidates are running for Snowmass Village elected office this year — three for mayor and three for two open seats on Town Council.

The Snowmass Sun is posing a different question to the candidates every week leading up to Election Day, which is Nov. 4. To learn about how to vote, visit http://www.pitkinvotes.org.

This week's question: There has been some discussion lately about Snowmass' identity. It comes up when we discuss development and what we want the town's physical character to be like, and also in talks about how we market the resort. What is your vision for the Snowmass Village community?

Mayoral candidates

Markey Butler

We are a community founded by hard working families, developed by enthusiastic, forward thinking idealists, dreamers and entrepreneurs, rooted in a sense of true community connections and joined by our shared love of these mountains. And when we share these universal experiences we will appeal to anyone. Snowmass has so much to share, we need to offer the best possible solutions for improving our tourism while enhancing our own community way of life.

Now that our next Phase of Base Village has been approved, we need to carefully review and discuss a new Community Amenity which I hope will be an expanded Discovery Center for our historic climatology and well-preserved Ice Age fossils. Coupled with astronomy and educational programming in a dual purpose center, along with this, we could incorporate Performing Arts to develop a significant amenity for our locals and guests, adding yet another appealing aspect. Our town is blessed with the best skiing in the world, a world-renown Ski School, year-round mountain activities, some of the best mountain biking trails, the world class Anderson Art Ranch art center, many new summer events that seem to be improving annually, and many additional wonderful amenities.

Thus, I do believe that we should continue to expand our image as Aspen/Snowmass and continue to create collateral promoting of our Village with the assets that are not found in Aspen. Our town is a place of Discovery to be discovered!

I envision a community that celebrates a cultural identity grounded in its skiing and ranching heritage, sustainability, discovery, and the arts. I see a community with a best-in-class reputation as a welcoming and inclusive family-friendly resort offering a safe, convenient and dynamic experience for the people that choose to live and vacation here.

I look forward to having a vibrant and inviting commercial core featuring experiential public spaces that highlight the unique businesses and attractions that define our community. I envision an entryway that offers a welcoming arrival experience, minimizes way-finding confusion, and instills a sense of community pride.

I picture a community that honors its rural small-town character and the integrity of its natural environment, while embracing its own evolution and the new ideas that will make it relevant and appealing to future generations. My vision is to provide the creative and collaborative next-generation leadership that helps Snowmass Village find balance in achieving sustainable growth without compromising our sense of community.

My vision for Snowmass Village is that we have a sustainable community, providing amenities for our residents as well as our guests. We must preserve our environment. I helped write and believe in our mission statement. It is just as applicable and attainable today as it was several years ago when it was written. We all love this community and must strive to preserve its unique character.

My vision for Snowmass Village is to be more of a multi-seasonal, economically viable community to allow residents and guests to enjoy our natural environment and the offerings of our region. We are always going to be in the shadows of our Internationally acclaimed neighbor, Aspen, but I believe Snowmass Village needs to continue our quest to stand on our own feet and bring new people to our community. I've met many people over the years which tell me they came to the Colorado High country to visit the Aspen area and then found our corner of the world and they determined they found heaven in Snowmass Village. Besides the awesome views we all see daily, they have most every time exclaimed the pleasant and welcoming experience from the local people they've met. I hope to maintain the positive aspects of what makes us all happy to call Snowmass Village home.

My vision for Snowmass Village is to provide a world class experience for our residents and our guests. I want our community to believe wholeheartedly that this is the greatest place on earth to live and I want our guests to be convinced that Snowmass Village is the only place they need to go for a family vacation or business function. I have visited almost every ski resort in the US and Snowmass has a leg up on the competition because of the amount of ski in-ski out accommodation available. Snowmass is truly a ski village like none other and I think that should be central to our marketing message. When a guest can walk out of their hotel, condo, lodge or house, drop their skis in the snow and ski away, it is a game changer. In addition, I believe we have some of the best mountain biking in the county and our trails get better every summer. I am an advocate of Snowmass Village because I am a product of this community. I am a skier and a mountain biker and I would like to bring that passion to the development process and represent our community on the town council.

The next Town Council will guide Snowmass Village towards its stated goal to be a leading multi season family oriented mountain resort. By working with various constituencies throughout the Town, Base Village can be moved towards completion, the Discovery Center can become a major attraction, the Entryway can get a new look, the connections between our three nodes can improve, Snowmass Village can be recognized as a world class mountain bike resort, and additional employee housing can get built when needed. Each of these achievements requires significant work by residents, Town staff, volunteer boards and the Town Council. In order to reach these goals, all the parties will need to participate in open discussion and problem solving.

If we can work together to advance these opportunities, our economy will continue to steadily improve. Commercial and residential space will become more balanced with more "heads on beds" in Base Village. In addition, continuing the expansion of the summer season special events will also be a catalyst for economic growth.

If I am elected to Town Council, I will use both my financial and land use experience to facilitate discussions with residents, guests, businesses, and colleagues. Through open dialogue we can identify issues and find solutions that work. If you share my vision for our Town, I would be honored to serve Snowmass Village on the Town Council.
