Ride on folks.

The Aspen Cycling Club 2014 season begins this week.

The first race on the cycling calendar is set for Wednesday afternoon — the Old Snowmass Time Trial.

“The course begins at the intersection of East Sopris Creek Road and Capitol Creek Road in Old Snowmass,” said Aspen Cycling Club President Mike Maple, inviting all cyclists to join the summer fun on road bikes and mountain bikes.

“The course first climbs up Capitol Creek Road for 3 miles to a turnaround at the entrance to St. Benedict’s Monastery,” Maple said. “Riders than return along Capitol Creek Road past the start line and continue up Snowmass Creek Road.”

He said the finish is one-half mile past Watson Divide Road on Snowmass Creek Road.

The total length of the time trial is 8.25 miles. The elevation gain is 750 feet, Maple said.

“Registration will be held between 5 and 5:50 p.m. at the start line,” Maple said. The first racer will take off at 6 p.m. Racers will start every 30 seconds after that.

“The Old Snowmass Time Trial includes a Never-Ever Category,” Maple said, adding that the idea is to introduce cyclists to the racing scene.

“Love to ride your bike ,but not sure how to get started racing? Then our ‘never ever’ races could be your ticket,” Maple said.

The Never-Ever races are marked on the 2014 calendar.

“They are a fun, safe way to try a club race for the first time,” Maple said.

The Aspen Cycling Club leader said parking is very limited near the start line.

“Racers are encouraged to park at the park and ride near the intersection of Highway 82 and Snowmass Creek Road (Old Snowmass Conoco) and ride to the start as a part of their warmup,” Maple said.

Registration details for the Aspen Cycling club and the 2014 race season are available at http://www.aspencyclingclub.org.

Complete schedule details as well as group and individual race registration info are available on the website.

Potential new members can race their first race for free. Visitors and nonmembers can race for $10 per race. Racing waiver forms are required form all riders.

Members who have paid their $65 annual dues will pay $5 per race. There are discounts for full-season registration.

Online registration will close at noon on the Tuesday before each race.

“Online registration is preferred, but if you don’t choose this option, come to the start with your completed form and remember to bring your entry money,” Maple said.

“For your first race of the season, please arrive early to allow plenty of time to complete registration and pick up your race number. Registration opens at 5,” he said.

In addition, Maple said seven course marshals are needed for Wednesday’s Old Snowmass Time Trial. Points will be awarded to members who give their time and effort to volunteer as marshals.

To volunteer, please email Mouse at mousesmv@hotmail.com or call her at 970-618-4626.

In the event of inclement weather on race day, the Aspen Cycling Club Board of Directors will communicate with the race director to determine the club’s ability to operate a race that is reasonably safe for competitors.

Race changes will be emailed to riders.

The latest updated information on races is available at the club hotline at 970-922-2000.
