Snowmass Village hopes the fourth time is the charm for transit project

Sarah S. Chung

The Snowmass Village Town Council is hoping the fourth time is the charm as it embarks on another effort to plan a transit plaza across from the Snowmass Village Mall.

“I think the idea is to determine what’s good about the last three renderings, find the right combination and move forward,” said Mayor T. Michael Manchester. “Being through several years of this process, I’m anxious to get moving already.”

So with a directive to marry the best of the old and the new, transportation engineering firm MK Centennial has been hired to layout the fourth, and hopefully final, design for a new transportation center. That center will likely include additional parking and a consolidation of the town’s buses and shuttles.

At a work session Monday, MK Centennial was given the go-ahead to proceed with a study of the town’s transit needs and map the potential site.

Council member Jack Hatfield estimated that the earlier research and plans cost approximately $120,000; an oft-repeated sentiment at Monday’s gathering was to make sure that expense was not for naught.

“I’m uncomfortable with spending a huge chunk of money having known we’ve done this three times before,” Hatfield said.

The majority of the council shared Hatfield’s feelings. The decision to authorize the full $93,000 planning contract with MK Centennial was postponed until a thorough review of the old plans is finished.

Town officials are hopeful that the planning and design can be completed by the middle of June.
