“‘Topping-off’ Party planned at Snowmass” announced The Aspen Times March 8, 1979. “The new Snowmass Center being built on the Benedict property at Snowmass, is roofed in and has taken shape enough so that visitors can see where future shops will be. To celebrate, the developers have scheduled a ‘topping-off’ party…. Officials of Aspen, Pitkin County, and the Town of Snowmass have been invited, as well as the builders, Greer Construction. The center will have a 7,000 square foot grocery, operated by John Duxman, who runs the Village Market in Vail. The post office will move to the Center, from the village mall. Steve Wicks of Aspen Drugs will operate a pharmacy and liquor store in the new center. Other shops will include Snowmass Interiors, and plant shop, a dentist, and Steve Parmelee’s Snowmass Property Management. La Cuisinier is considering a pastry and coffee shop. The Snowmass Village town hall will also be a tenant. Tentative opening date for the grocery and major first-floor shops is June 1.” The Center was originally intended to be the “center” for local activities including the town operations, police department, post office, and grocery needs along with a few businesses that served the community rather than tourist operations which could be found in the Mall. It served as the downtown core for the Town of Snowmass Village for many years.
