Snowmass starts budget talks

The Snowmass Village Town Council will take a first look at the town’s 2014 budget today.

Much of the scheduled six-hour meeting will focus on the marketing and group-sales funds. The council will receive a presentation of the business plan produced by the Marketing, Special Events and Group Sales Board and then look at the budgets for those funds first.

As part of that discussion, the council will decide whether to approve a $150,000 contribution to a joint bid to entice Delta Air Lines to start serving Pitkin County again. The city of Aspen, the county, the Aspen Chamber Resort Association and Aspen Skiing Co. also committed funds to the package. The marketing board approved the contribution at its meeting Oct. 1.

Funds proposed for marketing and group sales in 2014 are just under $6 million.

Interim Town Manager Gary Suiter said at the council’s regular meeting Monday that he doesn’t expect to get past the marketing and group-sales funds in this first session. If the officials are able to work on the rest, one item they will consider is staff raises. Suiter is recommending a merit pool of as much as 5 percent for staff increases, the same pool that was provided for town employees in 2013.

The special meeting is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the council chambers in Town Hall.
