Snowmass reviews mall redevelopment

Steve AlldredgeSnowmass correspondent

Snowmass Village officials discussed the latest ideas on how to revitalize the mall area Tuesday night. The option that appears to be most popular is the most extensive and might include a new tax district to pay for some of the development.Highlights of that plan include new parking options and altered traffic flow, making Brush Creek Road the major entrance. Other key components include a new transit center and bus barn, more inviting public space on the mall and additional amenities like an ice rink, water fountain, a new conference center and more public sculptures on wider pedestrian areas.A topic that is sure to draw further discussion is the taxing district the town and its consultants are suggesting to provide additional economic incentive to the owners of the commercial property.Multiple studies have shown the mall is losing sales and guests because the retail area is not as world-class as its ski area. With Base Village development under way, the level of construction concerns some council members. They directed town staff to proceed with additional forums to solicit feedback about the redevelopment plans.
