SNOWMASS VILLAGE – A fire that started in the kitchen of a Snowmass Village restaurant was quickly knocked down Sunday evening.

The fire caused minor to moderate damage to the kitchen at the Village Steakhouse, near the village mall; the cause is under investigation, according to a Snowmass-Wildcat Fire Protection District press release.

When the first of 19 firefighters arrived, “smoke was found in both the kitchen and the restaurant,” the press release says.

The business is on the second floor of the Wildwood Lodge, “just one level up from the village mall,” according to the lodge website.

Firefighters responded in kind, with an engine and a 100-foot “tower/ladder,” and requested mutual aid from the Aspen and Basalt fire protection districts.

The fire was extinguished in the kitchen; no one was injured.

Staff and customers, those eating and those about to be seated, were evacuated, said Capt. Jeff Edelson of the Snowmass-Wildcat district.

Fire investigators were expected to arrive Monday morning, along with restoration crews, he said.

The fire damaged the kitchen’s ceiling and vent hood system, but restaurant officials were hopeful the kitchen could be back in operation sometime Monday, Edelson said.
