The Snowmass Recreation Center gymnasium is back in action as of Wednesday night.

Just more than half of the 4,800-square-foot gymnasium had been closed after a pipe from the pool filter system cracked and flooded the area Dec. 30, less than one week before the center’s winter sports leagues were slated to start.

The leagues kicked off Wednesday with volleyball and continued Thursday with futsal (indoor soccer), Snowmass Parks, Recreation and Trails director Andy Worline said.

Worline said in January that insurance would cover the cost of the repair at an amount that was unknown at the time. Worline could not be reached Thursday for further comment on the gym repair cost.

Along with the rec center’s organized sports league, the gym often hosts informal pick-up games, birthday parties, camps, meetings and more. Fitness classes also relocate to the gymnasium when space is an issue.

The incident marks the second time the gym flooded since the rec center opened in 2009, though Worline and other town officials have said the two instances are unrelated.
