Snowmass History: With local help, blind skiers learn to XC ski
Aspen Historical Society/Aspen Times Collection
“Bold Skiing Program using cross-country,” announced the March 4, 1976, Aspen Times. “Originally a downhill program for blind skiers, Aspen BOLD is now into cross-country. Directors of the program are putting the blind skiers on cross-country skis their first day. They find that through the familiarization with the sensation of sliding and arm, pole, and leg coordination, the blind skiers progress much faster when they get on the slopes. Coordinator for the BOLD cross-country program is Steve Prudden. Touring has also been found more practical for blind skiers who live in an area where there is snow, but no alpine slopes.”
