CRESTED BUTTE, Colo. ” The body of a 36-year-old snowboarder missing since last week has been found buried in avalanche debris near Mount Emmons, near Crested Butte and southwest of Aspen.

Mount Crested Butte Police Chief Hank Smith says crews discovered the body of Michael Bowen of Crested Butte on Saturday afternoon under 3 to 4 feet of snow at the bottom of an avalanche path.

Bowen went snowboarding alone in the backcountry on the east side of Mount Emmons on Wednesday. Friends reported him missing the following day when he didn’t return.

Smith says Bowen was an avid snowboarder and skier who “frequently and routinely skied in precarious, extreme conditions.”

Crested Butte Search and Rescue conducted the search with help from the Crested Butte Mountain Resort ski patrol and Western State College Search and Rescue.
