Smith steps down as head of aviation at Aspen airport

Aspen Times Staff Report

Scott Smith has resigned his position as director of aviation at Aspen-Pitkin County Airport.

Smith has accepted a position as deputy director of airports for Ventura County, Calif. His resignation will become effective April 30.

Smith said he is leaving for family reasons – to be near his daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter in Los Angeles.

“I don’t want to be a grandpa a thousand miles away,” Smith said. But he said he and his wife are not leaving without regrets. They are leaving behind another daughter in El Jebel. “It’s tough to leave her,” he said.

He said he’s looking forward to the challenges of the new job, but if it wasn’t for the lure of family, he wouldn’t be leaving the employ of Pitkin County.

“It’s a great group of people to work for,” he said.

Smith joined Pitkin County as assistant director of aviation in November 1990, and became director of aviation in September 1991.

The county is currently seeking someone to fill the position, which oversees operations at the airport.
