BASALT ” The El Jebel City Market boosted its efforts to catch people with sticky fingers this fall.

The grocery store has caught 11 people shoplifting and turned them over to the Basalt Police Department since the second week of September, Police Chief Keith Ikeda said.

The supermarket installed a new video surveillance system which is working wonders. “When they did the store remodel, they put in a state-of-the-art system,” Ikeda said.

When a theft is spotted, the store’s security staff detains the alleged thief and calls the cops. They are issued a summons for petty theft and ordered to appear in Basalt Municipal Court. They must go to county court if it is a second offense.

The thieves don’t seem to be targeting any specific item, like Snickers bars, for example. It runs the gamut from health and beauty aids to steak, Ikeda said.
