Small fires quickly quelled

Lightning strikes started a small wildfire about 3.5 miles up the Fryingpan Valley from Basalt and another in Missouri Heights yesterday, rattling the nerves of midvalley residents.

Firefighters responded to the scene up the Fryingpan immediately after the strike was reported at about 5:20 p.m. After dealing with tough access up the hillside, they reached the site with a special truck designed to fight wildfires.

Firefighters extinguished the flames shortly after 6 p.m.

Firefighters also quickly knocked down a small blaze in Missouri Heights after the storm moved through. A dispatcher reached last night around 9:30 said that fire had been contained, as well.
