Small avalanche partially covers east side of pass

A small avalanche covered a portion of Highway 82 on the east side of the Independence Pass summit Monday.

The slide was reported to authorities in Pitkin County at about 2 p.m. The slide occurred near mile marker 65, which is less than 4 miles east of the summit on the Twin Lakes side, according to Tracy Trulove, a spokeswoman for the Colorado Department of Transportation.

Trulove said the slide covered the westbound lane of Highway 82. There was no report of a vehicle getting caught in the slide. Traffic was alternating in the one open lane, she said, and the Transportation Department had a loader en route to clear the snow.
