Skiers shoot for state title

Now that the Aspen boys basketball players have accomplished their dream, it’s time to chase the ultimate prize – a state title.

After advancing to the Class 3A High School Basketball State Championships with a convincing 70-58 win over sixth-seeded Del Norte Saturday, the Skiers begin their quest for a state title Thursday.

The Skiers (17-6), are seeded eighth for the State Tournament. They will take on Buena Vista (23-0) – 3A’s top team all season – at 5:30 p.m. at Clune Arena at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs.

Buena Vista has two of the state’s best players. Drew Wood, a finalist for Colorado’s Mr. Basketball, which honors the top prep player in his or her classification, averaged close to 24 points per game during the regular season. His brother, Brian Wood, averaged just under 23 points a game.

But the Skiers have a one-two punch of their own in seniors Lucas Farrell and Ryan Kerr. The Skiers also have senior Andrew Smith back from an ankle injury and senior center Stefan Koenes. Junior Corey Robinson completes Aspen’s lineup. All five are deadly scorers for Aspen.

Above is a look at how the state tournament will be set up.
