Skiers set off slide above Castle Creek

The avalanche danger hit closer to home Sunday.

The Colorado Avalanche Information Center reported that an avalanche was spotted yesterday above Castle Creek. It was triggered well below treeline by off-area skiers at Aspen Highlands. No injuries were reported.

The center warned backcountry skiers that pockets of high danger existed on northeast-southeast aspects. Riders should avoid slopes 30 degrees and steeper and also avoid lingering under steeper slopes as conditions continue to be tender.

Inside local ski area boundaries, conditions are sublime as plenty of snow fell over the weekend, including 4 more inches Sunday morning at Snowmass. One local “Powder Slut” said the skiing was the best in “five years.” Now that is impressive.
