Skier dies on Aspen Mountain

A skier died Saturday after colliding with a tree on the lower Bellisimo run on Aspen Mountain.

Authorities identified the man as Jonathan Stuart, a 56-year-old Aspen resident.

Bellisimo is an intermediate run on Aspen Mountain.

Stuart was spotted off the side of the trail by a passing skier, who then called the ski patrol at 2:42 p.m. The ski patrol responded immediately, but the man was unconscious and unresponsive.

While there were no known witnesses to the accident, rescuers surmised that Stuart left the designated ski trail and collided with trees, suffering head trauma upon impact.

Ski patrol initiated advanced life-saving procedures and transported Stuart to the base of the mountain. Stuart was wearing a helmet.
