A new gondola at Snowmass, new gondola cabins on Ajax and additional terrain at Highlands highlight more than $23 million in improvements the Aspen Skiing Co. is planning for the 2006-07 season. The Skico’s newest lift next season will be the $13 million Elk Camp Gondola connecting the base with the Elk Camp area. The eight-passenger, black-and-silver cabins will carry skiers 1,372 vertical feet from the base of Fanny Hill to Elk Camp in seven and a half minutes. A station at the base of Funnel will allow midway loading and unloading on the uphill leg. Also at Snowmass, new dirt features and additional snowmaking will improve the terrain park on Coney Glade. And the Assay Hill chairlift – which will become a quad – will get a new alignment to provide easy access to the midway station on the Elk Camp Gondola. On Aspen Mountain, new cabins will grace the Silver Queen Gondola and provide more room for passengers. The six-person lift will provide “stunning 360-degree views” on the 14-minute ride to the top, according to the Skico. Skico estimates the project will cost $8 million. At Aspen Highlands, crews will clear an additional 20 to 30 acres of terrain in the Deep Temerity area, which opened last season. The new trails will be below Mushroom and will allow multiple routes to the skier’s right of the Deep Temerity lift.
