Skico foundation giving out environment grants

Aspen Times staff report

The Aspen Skiing Company’s Employee Environment Foundation is now accepting applications for grants to fund environmental projects.

Grant recipients may be projects, nonprofit organizations, government agencies or individuals. The foundation supports environmental education and research, outdoor recreation, protection of mountain ecosystems and responsible stewardship of natural resources. The Environment Foundation’s board of directors checks all grant applications for eligibility and evaluates them on established selection criteria.

The foundation’s board recommends that grant requests not exceed $15,000. Requests for less than $8,000 are more likely to be funded.

The Environment Foundation is a nonprofit, employee-run organization. It provides assistance to projects that enhance and protect the environment in the Roaring Fork Valley.

The foundation is the only organization of its kind in the ski industry. Employee contributions are matched by both the Aspen Skiing Company and the Aspen Valley Community Foundation.

Roughly 1,000 Skico employees contribute to the foundation annually. A board of directors made up of employees governs the foundation and decides which projects to fund.

To request a grant application or to receive eligibility guidelines or other information, contact Auden Schendler, executive director of the foundation, at 923-8628. All grant application forms will be sent out via e-mail.

Completed applications should be mailed to Auden Schendler, ASC Development Foundation, P.O. Box 1248, Aspen, CO 81612. Grant applications must be received by the Aspen Skiing Company’s Office of Environmental Affairs no later than Monday, Nov. 13, by 4:30 p.m.
