Skico a great community partner
Dear Editor:
In his editorial on Aug. 27, Aspen Skiing Co. CEO Mike Kaplan asks the question, “So, do we appreciate locals and the community?” The case for a resounding “yes” to his question is stronger than Mike makes.
Consider what Aspen Skiing Co. does for the youth of this valley. Children ski free through age 6, and the 1,900 youth who participate with the Aspen Valley Ski and Snowboard Club (AVSC) each winter can buy full four-mountain season passes for only $155. That’s an incredible deal. Heck, youth pay $200 for a pass at Sunlight; teens pay $270.
Aspen Skiing Co.’s commitment to local youth goes even further. They have partnered with AVSC to help us achieve a fundamental aspect of our mission: to make it possible for all children growing up here to ski and snowboard. Nearly one-third of the families we serve receive scholarship support, and many cannot afford the pass we are able to offer. So Aspen Skiing Co. allows children who participate in AVSC programs of eight days or less to ride the lifts on those days without paying for a lift ticket. That’s what I call appreciation.
Let’s have more community partners like the Aspen Skiing Co.
