Six from Snowmass interested in town’s new marketing board

Six Snowmass Village residents have applied so far to be on the community’s new marketing, public relations and special events board.
Two weeks ago, Snowmass voters approved a townwide sales tax to generate $2.5 million a year for marketing.
How that money will be spent will soon be up to the five-member volunteer board appointed by the Snowmass Village Town Council.
The deadline to submit applications for the marketing board has been extended from today until Friday at noon.
The deadline has been stretched in part to allow the lodging, food and beverage, and retail sectors in Snowmass Village more time to nominate a representative to the new board.
In addition to the three industry members, there will be two at-large members on the board. The Town Council will select the at-large members from the applicant pool.

But the industry sectors have the ability to each select a single nominee, who the Town Council must then appoint to the board.
All six of the applications turned in so far to the town are from at-large candidates.
The person chosen to represent, say, the lodging sector does not have to work in the lodging business.
But like all marketing board members, they do need to live in Snowmass Village.
“There are two levels of this board,” said Carey Shanks, the assistant town manager in Snowmass Village. “One, if you are representative of a certain industry, then you should speak to that industry’s needs and wants. But the spirit of this board is that when you get to a decision, you will be thinking of Snowmass Village as a whole.”
The council would also like each applicant to “be a good listener, have broad-based experience and have good communication skills especially with Snowmass Village constituency groups.”
Also, the board members should “possess relevant skills and knowledge in the areas of marketing, special events, public relations, interpersonal relations, management and team building.”
According to Shanks, the village merchant’s association has met once to discuss a nomination and plans to meet again on Friday. There has been some discussion among the members of the town’s lodging association, but no formal nomination yet.
There is no association representing the food and beverage industry in town. Councilman Doug Mercatoris, who runs the Mountain Dragon restaurant, told the council Monday night that it was off-season and hard to get people together.
The six Snowmass Village residents who have turned in applications so far have experience in either marketing, communications, sales or business.
Bob Purvis is the retired managing director of global brand marketing for British Petroleum. He also just stepped down from the Town Council, where he played a key role in getting the marketing tax and board created and approved by the voters.
Peter D. Moore is a former senior vice president of corporate relations with the New York Stock Exchange and is currently a business consultant for Fortune 500 customers.
Pike Peterson is a retired businessman who was president of Unisource Corp., a company that sold commercial and industrial paper products. Peterson was with the company for 25 years and helped grow sales from $50 million to $1 billion. He was also president, for five years before his retirement, of the Eastern Paper Co. in Maine.
Jeremy Swanson is the director of communications at the Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Snowmass Village. He has experience in managing advertising campaigns, special events, public relations and Web sites.
Rick Griffin is the general manager of Snowmass Real Estate Co. In addition to managing the marketing programs for several real estate operations, Griffin has a professional background in film production, photography and journalism.
Mary Evans is an international sales manager for the Aspen Skiing Co. and works daily with tour operators and travel agents who send visitors to winter and summer resorts. She also has experience as a reservations agent selling Aspen/Snowmass.
The Town Council expects to begin interviewing candidates for the marketing board Monday.
