Aspen Times Staff Report

Wallace Black Elk, a 78-year-old visionary elder of the Lakota Sioux, will hold a healing talking circle at the Yellow Brick School gym in Aspen on Friday at 7 p.m.

According to “Grandfather Wallace,” as he is affectionately called, it was prophesied 19 generations ago that all people would come together and bring 1,000 years of peace. And according to the spirits – communing through Black Elk – the time is now. To that end, people from all walks of life, religions and colors are invited to attend Friday night to share thoughts on “peace within, peace without, peace on Earth,” and how 1,000 years of peace on the planet can be realized.

Grandfather Wallace has been a frequent visitor to the Roaring Fork Valley recently, performing sweat lodges, blessing ceremonies and lecturing about the Native American world view. He was born and raised on the Rosebud Reservation in South Dakota. An original spiritual adviser to the American Indian Movement and Native American representative to the United Nations, Black Elk has lectured about traditional Lakota spiritual ways of life for years around the globe.

The healing talking circle event is co-sponsored by Axis and Friends of Earth People, two local organizations dedicated to promoting holistic healing and Native American visionary forums.

“Wallace Black Elk is a national treasure and what I call a `walking phenomenon,'” said Connie Marlow, founder of the Friends of Earth People. “As a visionary shaman he sees and experiences a world far broader than the one the scientific paradigm accounts for.”
