Sink hole blocks lanes on Highway 82

Aspen Times staff report
Aspen, CO Colorado

PITKIN COUNTY – A sink hole in the eastbound lanes of Highway 82 near the Pitkin County Landfill has reduced traffic to one lane, according to the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities notified the Colorado Department of Transportation about a depression in the road at mile marker 32.2 on Friday at about 2 p.m. A CDOT crew responded and, while repairing the depression, the pavement gave way to reveal an area of eroded soil beneath the road’s surface.

Eastbound traffic was detoured on Friday afternoon. Traffic is now being diverted around the hole. Motorists can expect to use the right shoulder area as the primary lane of upvalley travel in the construction zone.

CDOT expects the lane reduction to remain in place over the weekend while repairs are started, according to the sheriff’s office. Colorado State Patrol troopers will be on the scene throughout the weekend and will enforce a reduced speed limit in the construction zone. A speed limit of 40 mph has been posted in the area.
