Silverthorne warms up to pellet stoves

SILVERTHORNE, Colo. ” Silverthorne is easing its ban on wood-burning devices ” the use of pellet stoves is likely to be allowed within town limits this summer.

The Town Council recently reviewed information about the environmentally friendly stoves, and council members appear amenable to changing the town code to allow them.

Last December, Silverthorne approved the use of masonry heaters in homes, but held off on pellet stoves ” a wood-burning device that may be even more environmentally friendly than masonry heaters.

“We took it one step at a time,” said Lina Lesmes, a Silverthorne planner. “When we approved masonry heaters, citizens came to us. We amended the code to allow masonry heaters. Now we may take it further to allow pellet stoves in town code.”

The code could be changed within the next few months.

Citing air-quality concerns in the 1980s and 1990s, the town prohibited solid-fuel burning devices, but made an exception for the masonry heaters, which capture heat from combustion and radiate it for a long period of time.

Pellet fuel is a renewable, clean-burning and cost-stable heating alternative made of organic substances ” generally recycled wood waste. Pellet stoves pollute so little that they do not require EPA certification.

“Since we have a pellet plant that utilizes our beetle-kill epidemic, It would make sense to utilize pellets stoves,” said Mark Mathis of Confluence Energy in Kremmling in a previous interview. “The average pellet stove is five times cleaner then the cleanest masonry or other solid fuel appliance.”
