Shots fired during family feud in Basalt

BASALT Gunfire disrupted a Basalt neighborhood and sparked a valleywide manhunt Saturday morning when an apparent family feud turned ugly, police said.”Several rounds” were shot outside of the Pine Ridge condominium complex on Original Road shortly after 10 a.m., Basalt Police Sgt. Joe Chavira said. No one was injured, but residents of the area were rattled. Chavira said police found shell casings from a .45 caliber handgun, so the shots had to be loud. The preliminary investigation indicates two brothers were apparently having a dispute with their father, who lives at Pine Ridge, Chavira said. “At this point, we’re still trying to figure out what occurred,” he said.Shots were fired into the pavement outside of the father’s condo. At least one round hit the condo building, according to Chavira. Several neighbors called 911 to report the incident. The two brothers fled before police arrived. Chavira said he had a vague description that two Latino men fled in a white truck. Other agencies in the Roaring Fork Valley were advised to be on the lookout for that truck, but Chavira said so many vehicles matched the general description that police realized they couldn’t stop all of them.Instead, they concentrated on addresses where they thought the two brothers might be located. Their identities were known but not released. As of Saturday afternoon, they remained at large.Scott Condon’s e-mail address is scondon@aspentimes.com.
