Shorter summer for downvalley students?

Aspen Times Staff Report
Aspen, CO Colorado

BASALT ” Summer vacation might come to an end sooner for kids enrolled in downvalley schools if one of six proposed calendars gets adopted.

The Roaring Fork School District created six options for review by parents, staff and the community. The school board is scheduled to consider a recommendation and make a decision on March 12, according to a recent district newsletter.

The decision will affect the start and stop for schools for 2008-09 and 2009-2010 in Basalt, Carbondale and Glenwood Springs.

All the options contemplate starting school earlier ” and in some cases, much earlier ” than usual in the district. Two options contemplate starting classes on Aug. 4, while the starting date would be Aug. 18 in three options and Aug. 20 in another.

School started on Sept. 4 for the 2007-08 school year, the day after Labor Day. The last day of school is June 6. School would end earlier, in May, under most of the new options.

The option with the most drastic change proposes a start of classes on Aug. 18 and an end on June 9. It would feature a two-week break in October, two-and-a-half weeks for Christmas and two weeks for spring break in April.

The options can be found at the school district’s website at http://www.rfsd.k12.co.us ” go to the link for “options for instructional calendar 2008-09.”
