Shop the City Hall Mall
The city of Aspen can no more regulate its way out of the commercial mix (“high-end” versus my end) imbalance than it could pound its way out of its employee housing shortage solely through developer exactions.
We need to be more creative: move the city functions out of the “Armory” to a relatively cheaper (ha!) location, and convert this primo space (location, location, location) into a vertically oriented, local-serving retail center. Make City Hall into CITY MALL!
Oh, sure, there are many reasons why this idea might not work; I just like to see the city staffers’ faces when I mention it!
Viva La Gente de Aspen! We’re Number ONE! We’re number ONE! Oh, wait … We’re TOP TEN! We’re TOP TEN!
Rick “Dick” Jones
