Sheriff recognized for veterans efforts

Pitkin County commissioners presented Sheriff Joe DiSalvo with a proclamation Wednesday recognizing him for raising tens of thousands of dollars for a local nonprofit that aids veterans.

DiSalvo’s annual Sheriff’s Cup Golf Tournament — held last month — raised $93,955 for the Huts for Vets foundation, according to a statement Thursday. A check for that amount was presented to representatives of the organization at the commissioners’ regular meeting Wednesday.

The proclamation recognized DiSalvo for “meritorious dedication and outstanding community service to Pitkin County’s veteran’s foundations,” the statement says.

DiSalvo’s golf tournament started three years ago as a means to support community organizations making a positive impact, the release states. The Aspen Hope Center, which provides mental health and crisis services, was the beneficiary of the fundraiser the first two years.

However, DiSalvo has supported Huts for Vets since it began in 2013 by donating an older Sheriff’s Office vehicle to aid the foundation’s efforts to transport veterans to the backcountry, according to the statement.
