Senior housing to be topic of update

Aspen Times Staff Report

There will be a meeting of local senior citizens on Jan. 28 to talk about the construction status of a senior housing project at the former Aspen Country Inn on Highway 82, according to local activist Ramona Markalunas.

The meeting will begin at 1 p.m. at the Castle Creek Terrace senior center on Castle Creek Road.

Markalunas said the meeting is to provide information to anyone interested in becoming a resident of the new senior housing. Part of the meeting, she said, will be devoted to a discussion of the need to update applications for the senior housing.

She said the Aspen-Pitkin Housing Authority, which will manage the facility, is requiring all applications to include the applicant’s 1998 tax returns, as well as the 1997 returns.

Markalunas said the crews remodeling the old Aspen Country Inn have completed the basement of the new building being constructed, and are nearing completion of six additional units in the older building.

Overall, the project is to provide 40 homes to local seniors – or, if there are not enough seniors who apply for the homes, they will be offered to other qualified local employees.

The construction schedule calls for the project to be completed in August, Markalunas said.
