See it before the fat lady sings
August 18, 2007
If you haven’t been yet to the North American Premiere production of Cavalli’s opera “Eliogabalo,” kill somebody to get a ticket as soon as you can. The singing is simply beyond compare. You never will hear anything at Belly Up during the next year that holds a candle to it.
Ed Berkeley’s direction is magnificent and the cast of singers will amaze you. Where on earth could such a cast assemble in such a setting as Aspen? “I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills …” Truly, we are blessed, here in Aspen, to be able to hear singing and playing and to experience direction of this caliber.
Thank you, Jane Glover and Ed Berkeley, honorary Aspen residents. And thank you to the tiny baroque opera orchestra assembled to support these fantastic singers. We rarely get to hear this kind of music at the Aspen Music Festival. Keep it coming, please. More of the same, toujours. “Bis” and “encore.”
